Since the 2020 pattern shift, CLAT’s Logical Reasoning section runs on argument-based passages, and Quantitative Techniques arrives as data-driven sets rather than raw arithmetic. Both punish candidates who prepare with old-style standalone puzzles. This note covers the question DNA of each section, the technique per question type, and a timing plan that protects your overall attempt.

1. The Pattern Card

  • CLAT UG: 120 questions, 120 marks, 2 hours; English ~22–26, Current Affairs incl. GK ~28–32, Logical Reasoning ~22–26 passage-based, Quantitative Techniques ~10–14, Legal Reasoning ~32–35.
  • Marking: +1 / −0.25 per question.
  • The key change: every Logical Reasoning question sits inside a 300–450-word passage — usually an opinion piece, editorial or argument excerpt. Quant sets are built around tables, charts or short data scenarios with 2–4 questions each.

2. Logical Reasoning: Argument-Based, Not Puzzle-Based

  • What it is. Each passage presents an argument; questions test whether you can find the conclusion, the premises, the assumptions, the flaws, and the implications.
  • The two-step read. First read: locate the main conclusion (usually the last or second sentence; ask “what is the author trying to make me accept?”). Second read: mark premises and any counter-consideration the author concedes.
  • The three-line map. Before touching the options, write (mentally): Conclusion →, Premise 1 →, Premise 2. Most wrong options are true statements that are irrelevant to the mapped structure — the single biggest trap in CLAT logical.
  • Concession spotting. Authors often include an opposing view before dismissing it. “At first glance… however” — the word after however is usually the conclusion.

3. The Six Logical Question Types and Their Techniques

  1. Main point / conclusion. Apply the “therefore test”: insert therefore between sentences; the sentence it logically follows from others is the conclusion.
  2. Assumption. Use negation: negate the option; if the argument collapses, it’s the assumption. Negation is the highest-yield single technique in this section.
  3. Inference / “what follows.” The correct answer is modest — provable from the passage alone. Kill anything with comparatives, absolutes, or outside knowledge.
  4. Strengthen / weaken. Anchor on the gap between premise and conclusion (usually the assumption). A weakener attacks the gap, not the conclusion directly.
  5. Analogy / principle. The correct principle matches both the scope and the direction of the passage’s reasoning — not just its topic.
  6. Author’s tone / perspective. Scaled, not extreme: “cautiously supportive,” not “passionately in favour.”

4. Quantitative Techniques: Data Sets, Not Sums

  • The format. 3–5 sets, each with a table/graph/short data paragraph and 2–4 questions. Percentages, ratios, averages, profit-loss and basic algebra dominate — Class 6–10 level arithmetic under time pressure.
  • The strategy. A set is a unit: read the data definition first, then questions. If the first question of a set needs heavy computation, do the rest of the set and return.
  • Option intelligence. CLAT options are often spaced far apart — estimate rather than compute exactly (round 47.3% to “a bit under half”) and eliminate.

5. The Four Quant Tools You Must Be Fluent In

  1. Percentage → fraction table (1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 ≈ 16.67%, 1/12 ≈ 8.33%): most CLAT percentages are convertible to fractions and become 10-second questions.
  2. Ratio scaling: if A:B = 3:5 and total = 64, parts = 8 → A = 24. No equations needed.
  3. Weighted average / alligation for mixtures and average-change questions.
  4. Approximation discipline: compute to the order of magnitude the options demand, never more.

6. Accuracy and Timing Plan

  • Logical: ~30–32 minutes for the section, ~26–28 minutes reading-equivalent; about 1.5 minutes per passage including its 3–5 questions.
  • Quant: ~12–15 minutes; attempt sets, not individual questions; skip any set whose first question takes over 3 minutes.
  • Negative-marking math. With −0.25, a 50% accuracy blind guess is marginal; a 2-option elimination makes guessing profitable. Never leave a read question unattempted after two-option elimination.

7. How Exams Probe This Topic

  • Source of passages: The Hindu, Indian Express opinion pages, Frontline, and books on law/policy — read one editorial daily and map conclusion-premise as drill.
  • Official mocks: the CLAT consortium’s sample papers and past papers (2021–2025) are the only authentic difficulty calibration; third-party mocks over-test puzzles.
  • AILET divergence: AILET reasoning is shorter-passage and includes some standalone logical questions — if you’re doing both (see Part 5 of this series), train the CLAT style first; it transfers downward, not upward.

8. Quick Revision: One-Glance Facts

  • Logical = argument analysis: conclusion → premises → assumption; negation test for assumptions.
  • Trap #1: true-but-irrelevant options.
  • Trap #2: extreme-tone options in inference questions.
  • Quant = data sets: fractions-for-percentages, ratio scaling, alligation, estimation.
  • Timing: logical ~30 min, quant ~15 min; skip 3-minute+ set openers.
  • Marking: +1/−0.25; guess only after eliminating to two.

Conclusion. CLAT’s logical and quant sections test reading discipline more than raw ability. Map every argument in three lines, run the negation test on every assumption question, convert percentages to fractions, and treat quant as sets rather than sums. Do this on consortium mocks for six weeks and these two sections become the fastest-scoring 40-odd marks on your paper.

Ten Worked Quant Items (The Exam’s Real Difficulty)

  1. A shopkeeper marks up 40% and gives 20% discount — profit % = 12% (1.4 × 0.8 = 1.12).
  2. Two taps fill a tank in 12 and 18 hours; a drain empties it in 36 — together: LCM 36, rates 3+2−1 = 4 → 9 hours.
  3. A train crosses a 240-m platform in 18 s at 72 km/h — train length = 20×18 − 240 = 120 m.
  4. If A:B = 2:3, B:C = 4:5 → A:B:C = 8:12:15 (make B common at 12).
  5. Successive changes +10%, −10% = net −1% (never zero).
  6. A sum doubles in 8 years at simple interest — rate = 12.5%.
  7. Average of 11 results is 50; the first six’s average is 49, the last six’s is 52 — the sixth result = 6×49 + 6×52 − 11×50 = 56.
  8. A boat goes 30 km downstream in 2 h and returns in 3 h — stream = 2.5 km/h, boat = 12.5.
  9. Mixture ratio 3:2 becomes 1:1 after adding 10 L of water — initial quantity = 60 L (the alligation cross).
  10. Selling at ₹540 after 10% loss — cost = ₹600; to gain 10%, sell at ₹660.
    Ten items spanning CLAT-quant’s real surface: profit-discount, pipes, trains, ratio-scaling, successive-change, SI, overlapping averages, boats, alligation, loss-recovery — solve them in under 12 minutes total before the exam week; any item over 90 seconds identifies the toolkit gap to close.

The Set-Strategy for the DI Blocks

CLAT’s data sets sit 3-4 questions deep on one table-or-chart, and the set-selection arithmetic mirrors DILR’s: the frame-read (10 seconds — is the data clean and countable?), then commit-or-skip (a set with derived rows-and-relationships takes 4 minutes you may not have). The committed sequence: read the data’s definition line first (what exactly is counted), pre-mark the largest-and-smallest (two of the four questions always hang there), compute with fraction approximation against the option-gap, and never re-derive a computed value across questions (write the derived row once). The candidate who treats each question as fresh arithmetic re-does the set’s work four times — the single most common CLAT-quant time sink.
