1. The Section’s Shape

  • The reality. Sets vary enormously in solvability-time: the same-looking set can take 6 minutes or 20; picking wrong sets is unrecoverable — hence the selection-first doctrine.

2. The Selection Protocol: The First Eight Minutes

The counterintuitive rule: spend the first 8-10 minutes NOT solving — scanning and ranking.

  1. Read every set’s stem (not the questions) in 60-90 seconds each.
  2. Score each on: familiarity (a known template?), clarity of constraints (well-defined counts?), question-type (specific-answerable vs ambiguous “which of these could be true”).
  3. Rank the sets; begin with the highest-scoring; keep one backup.
  • The signals of a bad set: conditions with many “or”s and exceptions; questions requiring full-case enumeration; unfamiliar game-boards (cryptic symbols). The signals of a good set: clean numeric constraints, a natural table-grid representation, countable possibilities.

3. The Solving Method: Represent-Constraints-Infer

  1. Represent. Build the right grid/table/line immediately — arrangement sets get a slot-row, distribution sets get a matrix, scheduling sets get a timeline; the representation IS half the solving.
  2. Load the direct constraints — the fixed placements first.
  3. Infer — combine pairs of constraints for the derived facts; write every inference down (the working memory is the bottleneck, not intelligence).
  4. Fork when needed — if two configurations survive, fork the diagram and test each; most sets collapse to one branch after two questions.
  5. Answer from the diagram — every question re-checks against the completed (or forked) representation; never re-solve from scratch.

4. The Set Types to Master

  • Arrangement-and-distribution (people around a table, objects to boxes) — the classic matrix method.
  • Venn-diagram-and-set theory (the 4-set maxima-minima family) — the formulaic type worth mastering.
  • Scheduling-and-timelines (tournaments, matches, calendars) — the league-table template.
  • Games-and-tournaments (the points-table logic) — recurring on recent papers.

  • The standard plan: 8-10 minutes selection + 3 sets solved well (26-28 minutes) + the buffer; targeting 14-16 attempts at 90% accuracy ≈ a 99-percentile section — DILR’s percentiles come from accuracy because attempts are structurally capped.
  • The abandon rule. A set past 10-12 minutes with no question banked gets abandoned — sunk-cost in DILR destroys the section (and then QA’s clock is already lost).
  • The TITA advantage. Many DILR TITAs have no negative — a solved set’s TITA answers are free marks; a guessed TITA costs nothing — never leave DILR TITAs blank.

6. How Exams Probe This Topic

  • The practice regime: 3-4 sets daily (mixed types), timed at 8 minutes per set-target; weekly sectionals; the log tracks set-type accuracy and the time-per-set distribution — the selection skill improves only from post-mock autopsies (“which sets should I have skipped?”).
  • The source material: past CAT sets (2017-2024) as the gold standard; the sets’ style has shifted toward logical hybrids — old papers’ pure-DI dominance under-trains the current pattern.

  • Doctrine. Selection first: 8-10 minutes scanning-ranking; solve 3 sets well.

In the mock you attempted five sets: two clicked (8 minutes each, 8/10 questions), one collapsed (14 minutes, 2/5), two never opened. The autopsy questions: what did the collapsed set signal in its stem that the winners did not? (Usually: stacked conditional language — “A sits third to the left of the one who likes…” — versus clean numeric constraints.) Which unopened set would likely have been a winner? (Read its stem now, cold — you will often find an easy one was skipped.) The ledger: your three attempted-good sets in 24 minutes plus one cold-read winner would have banked 13-15 questions at 40 minutes — the 99-band. The skill you take to the next mock is not solving speed but stem-judgment: sixty seconds of stem-reading before committing is the highest-paid minute in the entire CAT paper.
