The reason examiners reward knowing: India plants Bt in hybrids (for seed-industry economics), which express the toxin unevenly and force farmers into fresh seed annually — China’s true-breeding varieties express fully and can be saved. The pink bollworm’s resistance emergence (2015 onward in Gujarat-and-Maharashtra) traces to refugia non-compliance this hybrid system encourages. The perverse output: the technology succeeded while its institutional design capped the success — the sharpest single sentence available for any GM-policy answer.

The Mustard File: What DMH-11 Actually Is (For the Argument’s Sake)

The barnase-barstar system’s purpose is hybrid seed production in a self-pollinating crop: barnase causes male sterility in one line, barstar restores fertility in the cross — the hybrid seed that results carries heterosis (hybrid vigour worth 20-30% yield in trials). The glufosinate-tolerance gene (bar) rides along for seed-production marking, not field spraying — the herbicide-tolerance framing that dominated the public debate was largely a category error, and saying so precisely (with the hybrid-not-HT logic) marks an answer as technically informed.
